Specific information about using iPhone

All models of iPhones work perfectly with GyPSy Guide tour apps.

  • FINDING OUR APPS IN THE APP STORE

To find the tour you are interested in, click the link to the App Store here on this website, or you can search the App Store app on your phone. If you search “Gypsy Guide (location name)” you will find our tours for that location. Eg, search “Gypsy Guide Maui” to find the tours we have available for Maui.

  • DOWNLOADING THE APP OVER WIFI

Our Apps are larger than normal apps. You must download the app using a wireless connection. This is because your cellular carrier will block larger downloads to save you from consuming data. Our apps are not huge, most are under 200 MB, and so unless your phone is absolutely full, it will fit on your phone without any difficulty.

  • ENSURING YOUR LOCATION & GPS FUNCTION IS TURNED ON THE PHONE AND AT THE APP LEVELS

Make sure you have your Location function turned ON. To find it: Settings -> Privacy -> Location. Your iPhone allows you to turn the Location function on or off for specific apps. If your phone does not display a blue dot when you “Start Driving Tour”, go back to Location in your settings. Tap the words “Location Services”. It will display a list of apps that want to use you location. Find the tour on the list you want to activate and make sure the setting for the individual app is “on” or “always”.

  • TAKE A CAR CHARGER

The tours use the GPS capabilities of your device and the GPS chip uses up battery faster than regular phone function. So take your car charger with you and keep your phone plugged in as you drive. Most sightseeing days are quite long and you don’t want to run out of battery before your day is finished.

  • SOUND QUALITY

The stereo speakers of the car you are driving provide the very best sound quality for the tours.

There are reports that some iPhones can accidentally block output volume. If you find that you have set up your audio through the vehicle correctly, but you are hearing no sound as the commentary points are playing, it could be that your iPhone thinks its output volume is blocked. The easiest way to correct this is to simply reboot your phone and then relaunch the tour app.

What Type of iPad do you have?

There are 2 types of iPads: WiFi-Only models and Network-Capable or 3G/4G iPads. Don’t know what type iPad you have – check Apple Support

  • USING WIFI + CELLULAR (WITH GPS CHIP) MODEL iPAD

This type of iPad will work perfectly for your GyPSy Guide driving tours because its hardware does include a GPS chip. Throughout our website, we are constantly reminding you that GyPSy apps do not need a cellular or data network to operate. That is true. The reason why only network-capable types of iPads work is because they are the only type that Apple manufacture with a GPS chip inside. It has nothing to do with a need to actually be connected to a network. If you have a cellular model of iPad, but you haven’t signed up with a carrier – it will still work for our tours – because it has a GPS chip.
  • USING WIFI ONLY (WITHOUT GPS CHIP) MODEL iPAD

WiFi-Only iPads will not play the tours automatically. The reason is that WiFi-Only iPads do not contain a GPS chip in its hardware. The WiFi-only models do offer some limited location services functions using wireless networks, but while you are out driving, this function will not work. While you are driving this type of iPad will not know what its location is so it cannot play the commentary automatically.

Some users have asked, if they can use a WiFi-Only iPad if they hot spot or tether it to a data device? This will not work either because the iPad will still not be receiving any location/GPS information.

So basically, you cannot use a WiFi-Only iPad and have the commentary play automatically as you drive.

  • DOWNLOAD iPHONE APPS TO AN iPAD

iPads have a default setting when you search the App Store that it only shows “iPad-only” apps in the search results. If you are searching for a GyPSy app and it says “no results”, find where on the screen it says “iPad Apps”. Tap on that to reveal the option to display “iPhone Apps”. Then you search should display our tours. Our apps are built for both types of devices.

All brand-name makes and models of Android phones and tablets contain a GPS chip and therefore all Android devices will work perfectly with GyPSy Guide tour apps.

  • ENSURING YOUR LOCATION & GPS FUNCTION IS TURNED ON

The important setting in your phone to be aware of is Location. First of all, make sure Location for your phone is turned ON. Pull down from the top of the home screen to show “Location” and tap the symbol to turn off and on.

It will display what Mode the device is using for determining its position. Make sure the Mode for Location is not set to “Power Saving”. This mode turns off GPS and only uses wireless cellular networks for approximate positioning. This is will not work for touring, so be sure to select a mode that uses GPS satellites.
