What to Expect

Niagara Falls are rightly claimed to be one of the most spectacular natural attractions in the world. It’s hard to disagree, with so many millions of honeymoons have been taken to visit is incredible force of nature. There is nothing equivalent to feeling the power of the water at the brink and the mist it generates in the swirling abyss below. There are many ways to experience the Falls; from above at Skylon Tower, on the SkyWheel from The Brink of the Falls – the free viewpoint where the water drops off the ledge, from the water below on a Hornblower Cruise, and even options from tunnels inside the falls.

This tour drives the Canadian side of the Falls. This side has viewing of all three falls; Bridal Veil, American Falls and the iconic Horseshoe Falls.

There are many other fantastic sights and attractions to enjoy even when as we travel beyond the power of the falls, and the carnival-like atmosphere of the Clifton Hill area. Our route tracks along the Niagara River Gorge with natural formations and stunning man made attractions too. This area was a pivotal location in the War of 1812 and we’ll find out more about historically important sites as we explore.

Where the river meets Lake Ontario, we’ll arrive at the quaint town of Niagara-on-the-Lake, which has been named no less than the Loveliest Town in Canada. Canada’s oldest wine making area surrounds the town and you have your choice of tasting and visitor experiences.

This full tour is designed to be driven from Toronto and back again. Since the Niagara region is a loop drive, you can join anywhere, even if not starting from Toronto (e.g. if you are coming from Buffalo). It’s easy to fill a day, but even better if you have a day for the Falls, and then add another day to explore the Gorge and Niagara-on-the-Lake area.

Suggested Start Location

Toronto, Canada or by crossing the border at Peace Bridge in Buffalo, USA.

How Much Time Do I Need?

At least one day, or extend to two days to stay overnight for the fireworks show and to visit the Niagara-on-the-Lake and the surrounding wine region.

Driving Distance

The distance between Toronto and Niagara Falls is about 130km (80 miles). The loop through the Falls area along the river to Niagara-on-the-Lake and back to the QEW is 48km (30 miles)

FAQ

WHY IS NIAGARA FALLS SO FAMOUS?

Said to be one of the most spectacular natural attractions in the world, it’s the combination of height and volume that makes Niagara Falls so breathtaking. To be able to stand on the brink and feel the mist as the river plunges 57 metres (187 feet) into the swirling abyss below is a spine-tingling experience.

WHAT IS THE BEST TIME OF YEAR TO GO TO NIAGARA FALLS?

Peak season at Niagara Falls is from June to September, with the best weather and more activities and events on offer than at any other time of the year. But expect crowds in the summer! To avoid some of the crowds, the shoulder seasons of late fall and early spring can be an ideal time to visit. However, you’ll want to carefully plan your dates as off-season visits come with the cost of missing out on visiting many of the amusements and attractions on Clifton Hill. Winter is your best bet for unobstructed views of the Falls and the enormous amount of ice that builds up beside and below the Falls.

IS NIAGARA FALLS IN THE USA OR CANADA?

Niagara Falls on the Niagara River spans the border of both the United States and Canada, and can be viewed from both countries. The Canadian side has panoramic views and it’s where you’ll find the iconic view of Horseshoe Falls as well as the best view of the American Falls from across the river.

HOW MUCH TIME DO YOU NEED TO VISIT NIAGARA FALLS?

Experiencing Niagara Falls from Toronto is an easy day trip, but many visitors want to spend at least one night in the area to slow down, see the seasonal fireworks evening show, and take it all in. The first day at the Niagara Falls area could include the visit to Welland Canal, the powerhouse, the waterfall and the attractions on Clifton Hill, before enjoying a leisurely pace on the second day visiting Fort George, Niagara-on-the-Lake and the vineyards.
