What to Expect
If you are planning a road trip, driving from Vancouver to the Canadian Rockies, then this tour commentary covers the the drive between Vancouver and Kamloops, in either direction, Eastbound or Westbound. The journey travels through the fertile Fraser Valley, into the lush and wet coastal mountains, and the desert-like landscape of Kamloops.
There are 2 short side trips you are encouraged to take along the route and a few scenic stops. The drive is designed to provide fast access and driving time will be approx 5 hours.
We follow the fastest route between Kamloops and Vancouver. The Coquihalla Highway #5 between Kamloops and Hope. Between Hope and Vancouver, the route follows the TransCanada Highway.
If you are driving directly to Vancouver Airport, you will have an option to take a shorter way and bypass some of Vancouver’s traffic.

Where does the tour start?
The tour officially start on Highway 1 at Kamloops. The first commentary point is just west of the junction of Highway 1 and 5. Commentary plays as you climb up the hill and you will be given directions to continue onto the Coquihalla Highway #5.
You can also join anywhere along the route.
The tour begins on Highway 1 at the East Hastings St entry ramp. You can also pick up the tour route anywhere by joining Highway 1 eastbound. There is no requirement to join the tour at the recommended start point. The commentary will play based on where you are on Highway 1.
How much time do I need?
You can fill a whole day if you decide to do all of the suggested sides trips, including Harrison Hot Springs, Hope Slide and Othello Tunnels. If you want to drive without stopping, you will complete the journey in a half day.
Does the tour visit Kelowna?
If you are staying in the Okanagan, especially the most popular areas of Kelowna and Penticton, then you will use the Okanagan Connector, Highway 97C to travel between the tour route and Kelowna. This route joins our tour at Merritt. You will still hear 80% of the tour even if you are staying in the Okanagan.
Are there any toll roads?
The Coquihalla Highway #5 between Hope and Kamloops used to be a toll road. The tolls were removed many years ago now, so there is no fee to drive on this fast route.
